Review

Rock Star Run is a decent runner-obstacle-dodge game for the Android, IOS, and Windows Phone platforms, with some great features and some issues in need of repair.

The graphics are a mixed bag, from the fantastically done characters: Louis the Afro sporting guitarist and Thunder the vocalist, to the clutter that is the lackluster user interface (UI), to the onslaught of obnoxious obstacles, that includes simplistic trees, strangely placed tables, and even more strangely positioned billboards. The vocalist character, Thunder at first seems to be a woman thus catering to both sexes, but seeing as he/she shares a jumping grunt sound with the more masculine Louis, it remains uncertain, and could be a nod to Axl Rose or similar looking singers. In either case, Thunder has very detailed hair where streaks and even individual hairs can be made out. Both Thunder and Louis pump their arms comically while running and Louis keeps his guitar strapped to his back, complete with flame decals. The buildings look as if the textures were stretched too far, and there is a nightmarish, senseless composition to the world, including segments of cobblestone and asphalt alternating with streams of water, floating marble platforms, haphazardly placed male and female diners and ads, and trees growing in the middle of it all. Finally, an image of the Parthenon is chosen as the background images that, because the games contains no turns, remains in the background, and like a nightmare, running towards it gets the runner no closer to it.

The game play can be fun, but there are some obvious flaws. Obstacles are randomly generated and it shows painfully when sometimes impossible to avoid combinations appear. Too often players are required to duck under a large bill board, only to immediately have to jump over tables to land, without a choice, in the game ending water. There is an over abundance of pop up ads, and players are lucky to get a couple rounds in before seeing one. Often the ads pop up so suddenly that players mistakenly click on them, leading to perhaps a tiny profit for the developers, but a large annoyance to the players. Almost comically the game contains fake ads, such as the Rolling Phones [sic] World Tour billboards that players must jump or dodge to avoid. The addition of these almost seem satirical, and perhaps it is intentional as a comment on the world today, in which advertisements form a third of the TV programs run time and pop up ads appear every few seconds in apps such as this. That might be believable if it weren’t for the real ads involved and the $.99 price to remove them. The app might do well to find a way to remove the pop-up ads and place real ads on the in-game obstacles, or just find a new type of obstacle to avoid as they have with the tables, though even those seem odd being in the middle of the street. The music can grow annoying and a continuous, more mellow track might be better suited than starting with the same guitar riffs over and over, as players lose and restart so often it grows extremely repetitive. Even selecting the mute music button players must listen to the rift until their first jump. Also the duck/roll feature really only plays smoothly during the rare occasion that players need to go under a large billboard off an elevated cliff side. All other times the players glitches under the cobblestone or asphalt roads.

Overall, if players can over look all the games flaws, it can be fun and certainly challenging. There is a decent replay value in Rock Star Run given its challenging game play and scoreboard and ability to share on Facebook and Twitter, but like Louis and Thunder’s attempted journeys to the Parthenon, this game is far from the godly perfection that Athena would expect.
