The graphics in Block Destroyer are very basic. Black and white basic, in fact. The issue with them arises with the glow effect of the title on the title screen menu, and with the arrows and fire button on the game play screen. The rest of the white is clean and offer a very neat, sharp contrast with the black, with the glow effect on the rest make the buttons and words appear fuzzy. The instruction screen is clutter and justified text splits up sentences unnaturally making it harder to read. there are ads, but the developers do a good job of keeping them to the end of every few matches, and they are not overly intrusive.
The game play is simple, but challenging, and like the developers state a bit like Tetris, however it’s more like a combination of Tetris and Space Invaders as players get to shoot blacks. The game play is quick and the game can be played when there is a minute or two to kill, or over and over as players strive for a new high score. The fact that there is only black background with white squares can lead to confusion while playing, and lead players to shoot a block to the wrong column. A highlight area of where the current block will land, as with Tetris, would be helpful, or a faint grid. The lack thereof does make it more challenging, but with the fast pace, it also leads to frustration.
The replay value is very good with Block Destroyer, as in its simplicity there is a innate value in its losing player’s interest slowly. A leaderboard would certainly help, as would achievements, but, for as simple as the game is, it’s engaging, and players can attempt the challenge over and over as they can with the more colorful classic, Tetris.
Block Destroyer – Try to survive as long as you can in this fast, challenging and addictive old-style game! It is like tetris, but reversed! You control a little square at the bottom of the screen. Enemy blocks come from the top of the screen and scroll down over the time. If a block reaches the bottom of the screen the game ends. When you press the “fire” button, you shot a block at the highest available position. When a row is completely filled, it is removed. As time goes by level difficulty increase and blocks will appear and scroll down faster! Try to get the best score! This classic game is perfect to kill the time at the bus station or in the subway, when you have 5 minutes and you don’t know what to do! N.B. the app could take up to 30 seconds the first time it loads, especially on older devices.
