Figuring out where the application’s word bank is pulled from has proved too difficult to determine, but for the most part the word bank works in the player’s favor. Names and nicknames such as Dori and Deb seem to work. Abbreviations such as WP, KG, CA, UR and INC were also considered words, but DIY (Do It Yourself) was not, and this can lead to a little bit of confusion.

The shapes that the title of the game implies are circles, are in fact not perfect circles but polygons of many sides, leading to a bit of a fuzzy, not crisp look. And whether two flats edges or two points or one of each touch determines if the “circles” mesh together or resist fusion. In the end, this adds to the challenge, as the player might think they see a word only to have the polygons not actually be touching, as well as the frustration one might feel. This leads to the desire for a shuffle feature in which shaking the phone would jumble the polygons, but no such feature exists in the current version. Hopefully in Word circles 2!

We at App Apes found ourselves with one L in the in-between our “FREEDO” and an “M,” and should that L not have been surrounded by nothing but T’s and R’s we would have been free of not only trying to find the elusive six letter word, but a seven. You can see how this can lead to tales akin to the big fish stories of fishermen, and in a way that adds to the fun. The majority of the found words will be two to four letters in length, but the achievements reach up to six letters, so this was obviously an intentional choice by the developer, so while finding a six is not impossible, it is certainly rare.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a Scrabble level of difficulty with the found words, look elsewhere, but for the layman, the length of the words is perfect. With no apparent punishment for incorrect words, Word Circles serves as a casual exercise of the brain with a unique, non-linear interface. It’s very good, not yet perfect, but certainly capable of getting to that point, and definitely worth a try, especially since it seems to be a gift to players from the developer(s) as it’s both free and ad free.
