Fish Out of Water is a good way to drown feelings of boredom, and offers plenty of fish, costumes, and crystal combination to keep things interesting for a long while.
Fish Out of Water has cute 3D graphics that seem to be slightly illuminated from within to give the game a positive glow about it. Despite looking fairly simple in the graphics department, the developers captured a lot of detail such as rain drops on the surface of water, moving waves, reactive faces when the fish and mammals bump into one another towards the shore, a mustaches on the red crab judge, and one can even see the fish, whale, and dolphin stain to keep going towards the end of a throw and on the last few slow skips, squeezing their eyes shut.
The game play itself is simple but engaging, with a good degree of strategy put into successful throws. Weather changes lead to bigger waves that few “fish” can penetrate well. In fact each character has its strengths and weaknesses. Errol the puffer fish bounces and travels far. Finlay the dolphin can break waves but not go high successfully. Micro the blue whale on the other hand loves to soar. Rocket, Olympus, are good for increasing skips as are the brothers, in which one gray fish turns into four after the first skip, making them the perfect choice to boost the player’s skip score. Fish Out of Water employs unique forms of advertisements, including a plane towing a banner with an advertisement in the sky and a message in a bottle that floats near shore occasionally. There are also regular ads, which can lead to a feeling of being flooded with advertisements. In addition, the game has an educational aspect with a clam that tells players interesting fish and ocean facts.
Replay value for Fish Out of Water is greatly increased with leadership boards, the ability to challenge friends, as well as achievements and unlockable prizes for leveling up such as crystals that can be use to gain access to cute costumes for the throwable characters. Upon leveling up the player is given a choice between 3 chests, that offer a single crystal to a handful or them, to the throwable black crystal. Levels are slow to gain, which encourages players to pay the freemium price at the Sandy Store: .99 cents to customize the color of the player name; $4.99 for 50 crystals or $14.99 for 250 crystals. But most everything can be unlocked with some dedication and a lot of throws.
Overall, Fish Out of Water is a fun game for killing some time with.
