App Apes Verdict
- User Interface - 8/108/10
- Functionality - 7.5/107.5/10
- Inexhaustibility - 9/109/10
The user interface in Suggest Movie is great, not perfect, with a bit of a jumble near the ratings, but it remains sleek nevertheless. For the most part the app is very responsive, lagging only occasionally when tapping the Suggest Movie button. Being free, one might presume the advertisements would be countless, but the ads are largely nonintrusive and typically only show up when pressing the back button to tinker with the search options.
While the year 1900 might mark the emergence of the initial motion pictures, those which can be considered as films, it does not mean they are readily available to be viewed in this App or otherwise, despite the search option allowing for such a time frame, or that they even come up when doing a search with all options open and every language selected. The classic The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906), the first ever feature length film, doesn’t come up, even though it is searchable on IMDB and even has a link to watch it free. Furthermore, The Kid a 1921 Charlie Chaplin film comes up with the correct date, but references the 2000 film featuring Bruce Willis, who certainly wasn’t alive in 1921. In other words the app has some bugs to work out.
The fact that movies still in theatres come up when searching in the current year, isn’t the worse of problems, but it can lead to some annoyance for those who find themselves hyped for the perfect rental only to find that they’ll have to pay top dollar at the box office and not one dollar at a Red Box to watch it. Also, while the Suggest Movie app certainly allows for narrow searching of ratings, it is only the ratings of the critics of IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, not the MPAA. No G, PG, PG-13, R or NC-17 search option here.
It’s clear this app is great for people who can’t make up their minds, or want to play a harmless game of roulette with movies rather than a loaded revolver. Otherwise, there are few enough movies in theatres at one time to make an easy choice, and Netflix as well as other movie-providing giants suggest films from tailored lists, suited for each individual viewer. As such Suggest Movie may really only appeal to a niche group, but it can also possibly serve as a substitute to browsing Netflix or a movie rental store’s aisle if one finds themselves in a situation that demands a distraction, such as riding a train or bus.
All in all, the fact that this app sleekly compiles information from several reputable sources is good enough reason to give it a try, if for nothing else than to see what movie chance suggests you see.
